Quickstart

The fastest useful path is: get your organization named, get one crew created, get the people in it, put something on the boards, and fly. An hour of setup, most of it typing in numbers and rocks you already have written down somewhere else.

Before you start#

• An invitation. Runway is in invite-only beta, so accounts start from an email rather than a signup form.
• The names and email addresses of everyone on the leadership team.
• Your current scorecard and rock list, in whatever shape they are in today. A spreadsheet is fine. So is a Ninety account: see Importing your data.

Set up your account#

1. Accept the invitation and set up your profile

   The invite email links to Runway and asks for your name and photo. Whatever you enter here is the name your crew sees on every rock, to-do and issue you own, so use the name they call you.

2. Name the organization

   Go to Settings, then Organization, then Configuration. Set the organization name, upload a logo, and pick a brand colour. The colour is the accent used through the whole app, so it is worth two minutes now.

   Two settings on this page are worth deciding before anyone else joins: the vocabulary the app speaks, and the day your scorecard week starts on. Both are covered in Organization settings.

3. Create your first crew

   A crew is a group of people who meet together. Most organizations start with one, the leadership team, and add departmental crews later. Create it from Flight Crews, or from Settings → Organization → Crews.

4. Invite the crew

   Invite people by email address. An invitation lands in their Runway inbox (the @ icon in the header) and in their email. Give at least one other person the Admin role so you are not the only one who can change the crew.

5. Fill the boards

   A first flight with empty boards is a dispiriting way to introduce the software. Before the meeting, put in:

   • Your weekly numbers, in Control Tower. Owner and goal on each one.
   • This quarter's rocks, in Flight Path, broken into milestones.
   • Every issue anyone has raised in the last month, in Land the Plane. This is the list the meeting spends most of its time on, so it should not be short.

6. Take off

   Press Takeoff in the header, choose the crew, check the agenda you are about to fly, and press Begin Boarding. Everyone else on the crew sees the flight and joins it. From there the app moves the whole crew through the gates together. See Running a flight.
