Core concepts

Four words carry almost all of Runway. Once these are straight, the rest of the product is just detail.

Organization#

The company. One organization holds every crew, every person, one subscription, one logo, one brand colour and one vocabulary. You belong to an organization from the moment you accept an invitation, and almost nothing crosses from one organization to another.

Organization-wide settings live under Settings → Organization and are changed by an admin. See Organization settings.

Crew#

A group of people who meet together. A crew has its own scorecard, its own rocks, its own to-dos and its own issues list, and it meets on its own schedule. Most organizations run one crew for the leadership team and add one per department as they grow.

Every item in Runway belongs either to a crew or to you personally. An item with no crew is private: it appears in your own lists and in no meeting. That is what makes it safe to capture a half-formed issue during the week and decide later which crew it belongs to.

Membership carries a role, and the role decides what you can change:

Admin

Can add and remove members, change roles, edit the crew's agenda, and delete the crew.

Member

Can use everything in the crew: add and edit items, run and join flights, rate the meeting.

Gate#

One section of the meeting, and the page behind it. Control Tower is a gate. So is Land the Plane. A gate has a name, a time budget and a list of things in it, and it exists whether or not a meeting is running: you can add a rock on a Tuesday afternoon and it is on the board when the crew next flies.

The gates that ship with Runway cover the whole Level 10 Meeting® agenda. You can reorder them, change their minutes, hide the ones you do not use, and add gates of your own with your own content in them. See The agenda.

Flight#

One run of the meeting, from boarding to landing. A flight belongs to one crew, follows that crew's agenda, and records itself as it goes: which gates were visited, how long each one actually took, what was added or ticked off, and the score the crew gave it at the end.

A flight is a shared thing, not a personal one. One person starts it, the rest of the crew join it, and the app keeps everyone on the same gate at the same time. Every finished flight lands in Flight Logs.

Items and where they live#

The five gates that hold lists all work the same way. Each item has an owner, a status, and a crew (or no crew, meaning private to you).

• Control Tower: metrics, one number per period.
• Flight Path: rocks, with milestones.
• Announcements: headlines, read once and done.
• To-Dos: seven-day commitments.
• Land the Plane: issues, prioritised one to five.
