Air Traffic Control is the two-page sheet the leadership team keeps: who you are and where you are going on one page, and what that means for this year and this quarter on the other. It is not a meeting gate. It is the document the meetings are in service of.

Vision#
- Core Values
- The handful of behaviours you hire, fire and promote on. Three to seven.
- Core Focus
- Your purpose, cause or passion, and the niche you serve. The thing you say no to everything else for.
- Marketing Strategy
- Target market, three uniques, proven process and guarantee. Who you sell to and why they pick you.
- 10-Year Target
- The one long-range number or outcome the whole company is pointed at.
- 3-Year Picture
- A date, a revenue and profit figure, measurables, and a description of what the company looks like when you get there.
The next ninety days#
- 1-Year Plan
- Revenue, profit, measurables, and the goals for the year. Usually three to seven goals.
- Rocks
- This quarter's priorities and who owns each one. The same rocks your crew works in Flight Path.
- Issues List
- The longer-range issues that are not this week's problem. Everything not urgent enough for the weekly list lives here until it is.
Filling it in#
Work top down: the 10-Year Target, then the 3-Year Picture, then the year, then the quarter. Each level should follow from the one above it, and working the other way round produces a quarter of rocks that add up to nothing in particular.
- Every box shows a count in its corner of how much is still blank, so you can see at a glance where the sheet is thin.
- The climb graphic tracks how far the ladder from rocks to the ten-year target is filled in.
- Print gives you the two-page sheet to take into a planning session, which is still the best way to argue about it.
Keeping it alive#
The quarterly rocks on this sheet are the same ones your crew works in Flight Path. Review the whole sheet at your quarterly planning session, reset the rocks, and leave the vision half alone unless something genuinely changed.
